The Bhangra Dance Club is a student organization that has been serving students since spring 2010. The organization aims to create a safe space for all students to enjoy traditional Bhangra dance, an art form and dance style that originated in Punjab, India.
“We stand for kindness and creating a safe space for everyone,” Gurinder Kaur, a senior studying industrial technology and member of the Bhangra dance club, said. “Being college students, everyone is on their journey, which is often stressful. With Bhangra, we aim to be a space where you forget about the stress for a while and just have fun.”
The Bhangra Dance Club is a non-competitive dance organization that performs traditional Punjabi dance three to four times a semester. The club’s biggest performance is during the biggest Indian festival of Diwali.
Another club member, Kusum Desai, a sophomore studying apparel merchandising and design, explained why she opted to join the club.
“I have always loved dance and learning new dance forms, and this club stood out,” Desai said. “The exec team and its members were welcoming and supportive, making me want to join. I stayed because it’s such a fun break from all the classes and busy days and I also met some of the best people through Bhangra.”
This student organization prides itself on running with passion and kindness. It meets twice a week from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the State Gym. Members also said that you do not need any experience to join the club.
Bhangra is an upbeat dance form with fast-paced music and energy. The Bhangra Club is a great opportunity for students to take a break and relax.
“New students should join Bhangra because it’s fun, energetic and exciting,” Desai said. “All the members are entertaining and friendly. It’s just a comfortable place.”
