A flood warning is in effect for four counties in Central Iowa, including southeast Story County, until 12:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

A flash flood watch is also in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for parts of Central Iowa, Northeastern Iowa, Southeastern Iowa, Southwestern Iowa, South Central Iowa and West Central Iowa.

“The greatest potential for heavy rainfall will be late [Sunday] afternoon and overnight [Saturday],” according to the National Weather Service.

Between three and six inches of rain has already fallen in the areas under the warning and may receive an additional five inches before the flash flood watch has expired.

“Flooding of rural areas and small streams and creeks is likely ongoing,” according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service also warns not to approach flood waters on foot or in a vehicle and to stay away from river banks and culverts.
