News Engagement Day
September 27, 2018
Hey there, my name is Nicole Miller. For the past year, I have had the privilege to be the editor for Special Sections at the Daily. I love my job because I get to work with advertorials, promoted content, and public relations pieces.
Even though my major is advertising, I have found a way to be successful within a news organization and build my portfolio. I have also developed strong project management skills, which ended up helping me immensely during my internship. As well, last year I got to work on a number of promotional events for the Daily, which always proves to be super fun.
One of the projects I got to work on last year was Daily Dates, a week-long feature that paired up single students on blind dates, prompted students who were already in a relationship to examine their feelings for their partner at a more intimate emotional level, and explored the different aspects of dating in college. It was a great way to engage students who may not normally pick up the newspaper or read the Daily, and overall, a really fun project to work on.
I believe that as a news organization it is extremely important to do the best we can to recruit staff and engage the public in fun and new ways, such as Daily Dates. Special Projects captures the light-hearted, promotional aspect of the Daily, and I’m beyond proud to be a part of the effort.
