The Iowa State swimming and diving team will compete on the road Friday against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
The Cornhuskers hold a commanding 21-2 record against Iowa State. The most recent matchup was a Nebraska victory last year 167-132.
Iowa State comes into Lincoln with a lot of momentum after its win against the South Dakota Coyotes.
In their victory, the Cyclones won 12 of the final events due in large part to senior Carley Caughron, junior Corinne Guist and junior diver Kate Mitchell.
Caughron won all four events she competed in. Two were individual events and she helped her relay team in the two other wins.
Guist gave the Cyclones an early boost by winning the 1000 free. Mitchell looks to continue her strong diving performance after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against South Dakota.
Keep an eye out for the underclassmen, as they again have proven to be effective contributors early on in the season. Freshmen Miray Abay, Lili Neisser and Grace Swoboda all won their respective individual events last week and look to carry their momentum into Nebraska.
Nebraska currently sits at a 1-2 record on the season after a blowout 104-196 loss to No. 24 Minnesota and a tough 40-point loss to Big 10 rival Iowa 130-170.
These losses came against two quality Big 10 programs and the lone win came coincidentally against South Dakota, a team that Iowa State has already faced and beaten. The Cornhuskers won dominantly 226-74.
This Nebraska team is better than its record shows and it could be a tightly contested meet.
This matchup is going to be an important test for both teams. One that could see Iowa State move to 3-0 against a solid Nebraska squad and help continue the momentum for first-year head coach Matt Leach.
A win for Nebraska would move them to an even 2-2 and would help right the ship after its loss to Iowa.
The meet will take place at 3 p.m. Friday in Devaney Natatorium in Lincoln, Nebraska. It will also be streamed live on the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ YouTube channel.
