The Iowa State Cyclones will travel to Kansas City this weekend where they will kick off against the Kansas Jayhawks at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Jayhawks are undergoing renovations on their home stadium and have moved the game to the Chiefs’ home stadium. This provides a whole new city setting for Cyclone fans to explore. We aren’t in Lawrence anymore.
Only about three and half hours south of Ames, Kansas City is a prime spot for tailgating, bar hopping and barbecue for football fans. In the famous Power and Light District, there are many good eating and drinking options for cyclone fans. If you are looking to play pickup games and watch football from outside the stadium, No Other Pub has options for you. Maybe you are looking for live music and a large crowd: both can be found at KC Live! Block, also in the Power and Light District. The insider word from Iowa State fans, although unconfirmed, is that the Iowa State fan bar in the area will be Kelly’s Westport Inn in Old Westport.
For tailgaters this weekend, the atmosphere will be a bit different. Arrowhead Stadium has rules in place for Kansas and Iowa State guests alike. The parking gates at the stadium will open at 10:30 a.m., and the Ford Tailgate District will open at 11:30 a.m. The game gates will open for people to enter the stadium at 1 p.m. To find out more about tailgating or stadium rules in and around Arrowhead, click here.
The game marks the 103rd all-time meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1898. This is the first time the teams will play anywhere but Lawrence or Ames. This game also serves as Kansas’ Salute to Service game, which will honor service members and first responders for their service.
One thing you can’t miss while visiting Kansas City is their barbecue. Jack Stack Barbecue is found in downtown Kansas City and is highly ranked among the infinite barbecue options in the city. Jack Stack is known for popularizing the side dish of Kansas City-style cheesy corn. The restaurant holds a 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Google reviews.
Before taking off from the city, consider stopping by some of the artistic and cultural attractions. The WWI Museum is an iconic part of the Kansas City tourism circuit. There are also many art galleries and even the Kansas City Zoo to explore.
