Iowa State falls in five sets to No. 19 Baylor

In Iowa State’s first home Big 12 match, the Cyclones fell in five sets to No. 19 Baylor.

Baylor currently sits at an 8-4 record while Iowa State is unranked and has a record of 8-6.

Against teams in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25, Baylor is 1-2 with its win coming against then-No. 2 Wisconsin. Iowa State was 1-3 versus Top 25 teams.

Iowa State took the first set 25-15.

Candelaria Herrera dominated in the first set with five kills to lead the Cyclones and a .625 hitting percentage.

Iowa State had 13 kills and a .382 hitting percentage in the set.

Iowa State held Baylor to 10 kills and a .056 hitting percentage as Iowa State had four team blocks.

Baylor then took the second set 25-19 with the Bears having a .429 hitting percentage as Iowa State added one more team block. Iowa State had a .154 hitting percentage.

Baylor’s Yossiana Pressley had 10 kills in the second set to push her game total to 15.

Herrera added four more kills and Jess Schaben had five for the Cyclones.

In the third set, Baylor won 25-14. Pressley recorded 11 more kills as the entire team combined for a .581 hitting percentage on 19 total kills.

Iowa State had 10 kills on a .233 hitting percentage.

With Baylor leading 2-1, Iowa State pushed the match to a fifth set after taking the fourth set 25-22.

Pressley added seven more kills, but Iowa State added three team blocks and limited Baylor’s overall attack to a .189 hitting percentage.

Iowa State had a .324 hitting percentage with Schaben pacing the Cyclones during the set with six. 

Iowa State libero Hali Hillegas had seven digs in the fourth set to put her game total at 19.

Baylor took the final set 15-8.

In that final set, Baylor had a .556 hitting percentage and 10 kills, while Iowa State had eight kills and a .136 hitting percentage.

Pressley finished the game with 39 kills on a .390 hitting percentage. As a team the Bears totaled 67 kills.
