Criminal complaint: Celia Barquin Arozamena had stab wounds on torso, head and neck

The man charged in the first-degree murder of an Iowa State student is being held on $5 million cash bond in the Story County Jail. 

Collin Daniel Richards, 22, was booked into Story County Jail just after 12 a.m. Tuesday for first-degree murder, a class “A” felony, 

According to the criminal complaint, after receiving a call 10:24 a.m., the Ames police located the body of Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, at 11:03 a.m. in a pond near at Coldwater Golf Links.

Barquin Arozamena had sustained multiple stab wounds to her upper torso, head and neck, according to the criminal complaint. The man, whose name was replaced with initials in the report, was located leaving the course at 1:35 p.m. Monday. 

The man identified himself as an acquaintance of Richards who previously lived in the same residence. He asked officers something to the effect of “what did he do to her?” according to the complaint.

The man then told police that Richards had said he was “having the urge to rape and kill a woman.”

The unidentified man told police Richard’s residence – two tents in an area near the end of the 600 block of South Maple Avenue. Coldwater Golf Links is located along the south bank of the Squaw Creek, which is located near the suspect’s camp.

A K9 unit tracked the victim’s scent. This led police to locate Richards who had fresh scratches on his face and a deep laceration on his left hand.

At 10:20 p.m. Monday, Ames police announced the arrest of Richards. Among charges Richards has been convicted or plead guilty to in the past including domestic abuse assault, first-degree harassment and third-degree attempted burglary.
