Iowa State’s Facilities Planning and Management, the University Library and the Hixson Lied Student Success Center provide room scheduling, providing study spaces for students during prep week.
The University Library website lists options to reserve study spaces including group, individual, family-friendly and research study spaces.
According to the website, the group study rooms allow space for two to six people to reserve the room and can be reserved for up to three hours.
The family-friendly rooms are catered toward caregivers and parents with “child-sized furniture, computers with educational software, drawing surfaces, and toys.”
The research room description listed is provided as such: “Graduate students, faculty, or P&S staff users can apply to use a research study room for the semester. These rooms are for research that requires extensive use of library materials.”
There are also collaborative and quiet study spaces available to reserve.
Suzanne Fisher, assistant director of space and scheduling, noted the students struggle to find quiet space during prep week.
“We do these as a relief to other overcrowded spaces on campus, or people who want a different place to go,” Fisher said. “For quiet, focused work, we’re happy to partner and provide that.”
Fisher also noted that technology in classrooms is available for use, as well as food and drink allowed, as long as people are respectful to the classrooms and others who may occupy the spaces.
“We would just want them to be respectful of other people who are trying to use the room, because you intend for them to be sort of more quiet, lower distraction,” Fisher said.
The Iowa State Dean of Students Office website presents information on the Hixson Lied Student Success Center.
