The College of Design hosted its program night, an opportunity for students to meet with faculty and experienced students about future major choices.
“Program Night is an opportunity for our core design students or first-year students to explore the different majors that are available to them as they choose their major at the end of their first year,” said Mindy Cooper, an academic advisor at the College of Design.
Cooper said that this gives students the opportunity to see the details of each major.
“Being able to talk to students who are actually in the major, seeing the work that they actually do,” Cooper said. “Hearing from faculty about career opportunities and all that. It gives them (first-year students) more in-depth information and the nitty-gritty of what it will take to succeed in that major.”
Peter Scheidt, assistant professor of wood and material studies, said the event offers representation of what the majors are like.
“Sometimes there is a major that the students are not familiar with, just a name on a website,” Scheidt said. “This event gives a chance to put a face to that name, see the products and what goes on.”
Layden Losh, a freshman in the College of Design, said it was nice to see the options offered.
“It’s cool to see all the different majors because right now, I’m still undecided,” Losh said. “It’s fun to go and talk and see all the different majors. Give me something to sit down and think about.”
Carter Lindley, an undecided freshman in the College of Design, said the event gave him an opportunity to see things he wouldn’t get to see normally.
“Allows me to know the pay rate, what a real -life application will look like,” Lindley said. “It was also nice getting to know if I was going to enjoy it and think it was worth my time.”
Cooper said the event had all College of Design majors present.
“All 9 majors are represented today, those are all of our official majors,” Cooper said. “We also have game design, which is a new major that starts in fall 2025, but students can start gaining information for it here.”
