What was supposed to be a raucous opening game of the season for Iowa State football was struck down by lightning Saturday night, getting canceled only four minutes and five seconds into the new season.

The lightning delay began at about 7:17 p.m. as lightning was spotted in the area of Jack Trice Stadium. At the time of the delay, Iowa State had just scored a 55-yard touchdown on a pass from Kyle Kempt to Deshaunte Jones to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Cyclones. There was 10:55 left in the first quarter at the time the delay was announced.

The lightning continued to be within an 8-mile radius of the stadium and there were two periods of pouring rain, soaking the stands and the few remaining fans, most of whom were in the student section.

At 9:42 p.m. Iowa State announced that the game was canceled with no immediate plans to reschedule. The few remaining fans exited the stadium as the rain continued to fall.

This is the first cancellation of an Iowa State football game since November 22, 1963, following the John F. Kennedy assassination.

Up next for the Cyclones will be a trip to Iowa City for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Game on September 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on FOX.
