The Memorial Union is hosting a pop-up Valentine’s Day shop this week. Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., come to the MU and get a gift for your valentine.
This pop-up shop includes succulents in creative pots, pins with different astrological signs on them, cards with fun designs and little clay animals to accompany a succulent.
The shop is located in front of the University Bookstore, and is run by the Workspace, which is a crafting center in the basement of the Memorial Union.
Tiara Young, a student employee and junior in graphic design, was running the shop on Monday.
“We do ‘paint your own pottery’, so a lot of people start off with a blank ceramic and they can do their own designs,” Young said. “So a lot of this stuff here is leftover pottery that people painted but never came to pick up, so instead of throwing it away we decide to reuse it.”
Some of the pots that held plants were also decorated specifically for this event by the staff at the workspace. There are some pots that had hearts or well-known Valentine’s Day sayings and others just had colorful designs.
“The cards are over here, and we have classes downstairs in the workspace,” Young said. “This woman named Rhonda, she teaches a paper marbling class. So they’ll take marbles and ink and go all over the paper, and then we just have little figurines to go with the plants that people want.”
The Workspace has many events coming up. This week, there will be lots of drop-in crafts including cottagecore mushrooms, Valentine’s Day hearts and a paint your own pottery miniatures week. All of these activities will be held in the Memorial Union Workspace room from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
