In its 11th win of the season, No. 14 Iowa State took down the No. 11 South Dakota State Jackrabbits 20-15. The team recorded its second win against a ranked opponent in five days.
Easygoing in the early stages
Starting at 125, sophomore Ethan Perryman was handed his 11th loss of the season against No. 15 Tanner Jordan. Perryman’s 6-3 decision loss was his closest margin in the previous two dual tournaments.
From the 133 matchup to 157, Iowa State swept with two major decisions in a win by fall for sophomore Jacob Frost and a 9-8 decision win from sophomore Cody Chittum. Wins from sophomores Evan Frost and Paniro Johnson rounded out an impressive middleweight stand.
Things fall apart, momentarily
The Cyclones faltered late at 165, 174, 184 and 197 in their most challenging slate of matchups.
At 165, sophomore Aiden Riggins fell to No. 10 Drake Rhodes in a 5-4 decision. Rhodes’ counterpart at 174, No. 10 ranked Cade DeVos, defeated sophomore MJ Gaitan in an 8-4 decision.
Two more ranked opponents toppled senior Evan Bockman and sophomore Nate Schon. They fell by decision, Bockman 6-2 to No. 5 Bennett Berge and Schon to No. 15 Zach Glazier.
Of its five losses, Iowa State only lost by decision, recording no major decisions or losses by fall.
Locking in late
Freshman heavyweight Daniel Herrera saved the dual for Iowa State, taking down No. 26 Luke Rasmussen in the final matchup of the night.
Herrera’s 8-7 decision over Rasmussen cemented the team’s 20-15 win by a single-point margin. Herrera’s win is his 20th of the season, tying Johnson.
Herrera’s win total only trails Jacob Frost in the list of Iowa State starters.
The Cyclones are back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Falls against Northern Iowa. The dual from the McLeod Center will be streamed live on The Varsity Network.
