The Iowa State Cyclones continued their strong play at the Wilson Invitational, defeating Long Beach State 4-2 in their second game.
The first run of the game was scored by Iowa State in the third inning on a two-out RBI double. The lead was then extended in the fourth with another two-out RBI double followed by a two-run home run.
Long Beach State responded with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and added another run in the fifth on a wild pitch.
The Cyclones tallied six hits and one walk, producing four runs. Junior Sydney Malott led the way with two hits, while senior Angelina Allen, junior Reagan Bartholomew, junior McKenna Andrews and junior Tatum Johnson each recorded one.
Bartholomew and Andrews contributed RBI doubles to get the scoring started, and Johnson delivered a clutch pinch-hit, two-out, two-run home run. All four of Iowa State’s runs came with two outs.
The Cyclones’ pitching allowed just two earned runs on four hits while issuing two walks and recording three strikeouts.
Sophomore Lauren Schurman delivered 5.2 strong innings and allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out two and walking one. Junior Jaiden Ralston came in for the final 1.1 innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout and one walk, surrendering a run on a wild pitch.
Defensively, Iowa State committed two errors, but neither resulted in unearned runs, preventing Long Beach State from capitalizing on extra opportunities.
