The Ames Police Department said the public should “probably be very wary right now” after a body found at an Ames golf course was ruled a suspicious death.

Cmdr. Geoff Huff, of the Ames Police Department, said a body was found at Coldwater Golf Links shortly after an unattended golf bag was reported to Ames police at 10:24 a.m., during a press conference at the Ames City Hall on Monday.

Huff would not say how long the body had been there, but said it had been there for a short time and it was believed the victim was golfing Monday morning.

Coldwater Golf Links was not immediately available for comment.

“It is suspicious, and we think the public should probably be very wary right now,” Huff said. “So if you see anything suspicious, we ask that you call us.”

No details were given about the victim with the exception of them being an adult.

“We are asking for the public’s help,” Huff said. “If you [were] around that area at that time of day, and saw anything suspicious, we would appreciate a call.”

Huff asked for the public to report any information they may have about the victim or activity near Coldwater Golf Links around 10:24 a.m.

“We ask for the public to stay away from the golf course at this time and it will likely stay closed throughout today and possibly tomorrow,” Huff said.

Huff said the identification of the victim will be released after police make a positive identification and the family is notified. Huff said more information will likely be available tomorrow.
