Iowa State will hold the annual Sustainapalooza event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in the Memorial Union Great Hall, South Ballroom, Oak Room and Sun Room. This year’s theme is “Our Green Community, Our Sustainable Future.”
Sustainapalooza is a free companion event to the Symposium on Sustainability and will feature many activities and displays from 38 campus and community organizations. Expect displays from groups focusing on renewable energy, waste reduction, sustainable agriculture and conservation efforts, along with music from KURE 88.5.
Activities include “Green it Yourself” workshops offering hands-on activities. Local refreshments will also be provided, and attendees will have the opportunity to receive “green giveaways,” such as reusable and eco-friendly products. The ISU Repair Cafe will be present to help repair clothing, jewelry and small electronics to “empower yourself toward reuse instead of disposal.”
The highlight of the event is the clothing swap. Participants can swap items in three ways: donating clothing, making a $2 donation (or $5 for three swaps), or bringing two non-perishable food items (or five for three swaps). All food and money donations will support The SHOP campus food pantry.
The symposium on sustainability, initiated in 2009, features a keynote speaker this year from Deb Chachra, an engineering professor at Olin College. The speaker will highlight “excellence nationally and/or internationally in environmental, economic or social sustainability.”
