No. 54 Iowa State beat Colorado State 5-1 on the road Wednesday. This was the first match and win of the Cyclones’ three-game road stretch.
Iowa State improved its record to 6-2. With the win, Iowa State has evened the all-time record 2-2 versus Colorado State.
Despite the 5-1 final score, the Cyclones got off to a shaky start in doubles.
Senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Suzanie Pretorius were the first to fall. On the No. 2 court, the Rams’ pairing of Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Diana Lizarazo bested Iowa State 6-3.
Iowa State’s freshmen pairing of Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Julia Camblor lost 7-5 to Colorado State’s Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley.
The Cyclones’ only doubles win came by forfeit on the No. 3 court.
Iowa State regained its composure after losing the doubles point. The Cyclones won four singles matches with a forfeit on the No. 6 court.
Sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez set the tone for Iowa State. Ramirez dominated Lizarazo 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 5 court.
Pretorius followed with a win of her own. She downed the Rams’ Logan Voeks 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 4 court.
No. 81 Kuearum and Camblor finished the match with simultaneous wins. Kuearum, at the No. 1 spot, dispatched Weekley 6-4, 6-3, and Camblor beat Erechtchenko 7-5, 6-4 at court No. 2.
Iowa State was 0-2 when losing the doubles point. But strong singles play righted the ship for a commanding Cyclones victory.
