No. 54 Iowa State beat No. 72 Colorado 4-3 Friday. With the win, Iowa State’s record improves to 7-2.
This was the first Big 12 match and win of the season for the Cyclones and the second win of Iowa State’s three-game road stint.
Iowa State got its sixth win in 26 matches against Colorado. The Cyclones now have a four-game win streak versus the Buffaloes dating back to 2010.
Doubles started with a 6-3 win by Colorado’s Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec. They downed Cyclone senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra on the No. 1 court.
Iowa State evened doubles 1-1. On the No. 2 court, freshmen Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Julia Camblor defeated Colorado’s Anya Nelson and Rixt Van Der Werff 6-1.
Colorado’s Mila Stanojevic and Lera Alexin clinched the doubles point. On the No. 3 court, they beat freshman Suzanie Pretorius and sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez 6-4.
With Iowa State down 1-0, freshman Gabriela Felix steadied the score. Felix won the first singles match 6-2, 6-4 versus Alexin on the No. 6 court.
Van Der Werff answered back for the Buffaloes. After Ramos Sierra took the first set, it was all Van Der Werff. She won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 4.
Pretorius evened the contest 2-2. She dominated at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 against Rebec.
Kuearum kept it rolling for Iowa State. At the No. 1 spot, she topped Stanojevic 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Kuearum’s win gave the Cyclones a 3-2 lead, their first of the match.
After a hard-fought battle, Camblor fell to El Sayed 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 on the No. 2 court. El Sayed tied the match 3-3 going into the final match of the evening.
It would be Vilar’s perseverance that led the Cyclones past the Buffaloes. After being down 1-4 in the third set, Vilar would rally back to win 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.
Iowa State returns to action against No. 13 Texas Tech at noon Sunday.
