No. 53 Iowa State lost 4-1 to No. 23 Baylor at home Friday evening. The Cyclones are now 9-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play after the loss.
Iowa State is now 2-30 all-time versus Baylor. The Bears now have a two-game win streak over the Cyclones.
In doubles, Baylor’s Sierra Berry and Na Dong struck first. On the second court, they won 6-0 over freshmen Julia Camblor and Gabriela Felix.
The No. 24-ranked doubles pair of Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea got the second win for Baylor. They beat senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra 7-5.
No. 87-ranked Dong extended the Bears’ 1-0 lead to 2-0 with her singles win. She dispatched Ramos Sierra 6-0, 6-1 on court No. 4.
Camblor responded for the Cyclones with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Kostenko on the second court.
Kennedy Gibbs notched the second singles win of the evening for the Bears. Gibbs won a hard-fought match against sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez 7-6, 6-3 on the No. 5 court.
In a competitive back-and-forth match on the sixth court, Baylor’s Nanaka Sato beat Cyclone freshman Suzanie Pretorius 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to close out the match.
Although Iowa State scored one point, two matches that went unfinished saw Kuearum and freshman Mari Paz Alberto Vilar up in their respective singles matches. The Cyclones hung with a top 25 team from start to finish.
Next, Iowa State plays No. 33 TCU in Ames at 12 p.m. Sunday.
