Nolan Sagan will share information about Ames’ Climate Action Plan (CAP) on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Reiman Gardens Garden Room.
Sagan is the City of Ames’ first full-time sustainability coordinator and serves as a resource for the community and city departments, supporting the implementation of the CAP. Before this, the city collaborated with Iowa State University for over a decade, sharing a Director of Sustainability and Sustainability Coordinator position.
The CAP is a roadmap to reduce Ames’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while promoting economic growth and community well-being. It provides a structured approach for the city to assess its environmental impact and implement responsible, sustainable solutions.
According to the City of Ames website, “Developing a Climate Action Plan was specifically established as an Ames City Council goal in 2020, it addresses the Council value of environmental sustainability. After completing the Greenhouse Gas Inventory, work has continued to develop a customized Ames Climate Action Plan (CAP).”
The City of Ames created Sustainable Solution Groups, a climate consulting firm, to help reach Ames’ goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 and an 83 percent reduction in emissions from 2016 levels by 2030. The firm helps to identify “practical, realistic, cost-effective strategies to accomplish the carbon reduction goal,” according to the City of Ames.
Sagan will share specifics about sustainability efforts in Ames and resources for residents about sustainability and reducing climate impact.
“There is a growing movement in the Ames community to define a comprehensive plan for the conservation of finite natural resources and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as a means to achieving a greater global good — a more sustainable future,” the City of Ames website states.
