Momentum shifts and costly errors spell out frustration for the Iowa State soccer team

One second remaining.
The Iowa State soccer team lost in a nail biter to the Missouri Tigers in its second match of the season by a score of 2-1 in overtime, but with one second remaining in regulation, the Cyclones had a shot saved by the fingertips of senior Missouri goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey.
“It’s unfortunate to go out the way we did,” said coach Tony Minatta, who was referring to the own goal that Iowa State committed during sudden death on a clearing attempt. “At the same time, this early in the season, to have this kind of a test just prepares us for the next game.”
It was not the end result that Iowa State was hoping for, especially after getting so close to winning the match at the end of regulation, but Minatta echoed that things like that happen in soccer.
There were many scoring chances for both teams and it seemed like it should have been a high-scoring match, which speaks to the job that both goalkeepers did in this one.
On the positive side of things for the Cyclones, redshirt junior Kasey Opfer scored her first goal of the season after getting close earlier when her header bounced just over the crossbar.
“[I’d] gotten so close all last year, I think I hit the post nine times, and then last game I hit the post and I was so close earlier in this game,” Opfer said.
Opfer has been a solid player for the Cyclones for a few years now and looks to bring her seniority and leadership to the forefront this year.
Opfer scored her goal on a well-struck entry pass on a free kick from junior midfielder Hannah Cade. Cade was fouled outside the box and was tasked with delivering a cross into the fray right around the keeper.
“I was actually aiming for [Marin Daniel’s] head, but I knew if I missed Marin short, that Kasey would be there,” Cade said.
Cade had a couple shots of her own in this match and one went on goal, so both she and Opfer were all over the field on Sunday.
Overall, the momentum shifted a lot in this match, with the first three quarters of the game being controlled by the Tigers. Then, everything shifted and the Cyclones seemed to control the game for the rest of the way until the botched clearing attempt.
Courtney Powell and Klasey Medelberg each had two of their shots go on goal without hitting the back of the net.
As for next match against Northwestern, Minatta wants to bounce back.
“It’s important… you’ve just got to take it game by game.”
