Iowa State volleyball defeats South Dakota 3-1 in exhibition

The Iowa State volleyball team took on South Dakota in an exhibition that saw the Cyclones win 3-1.
Several Cyclones shined such as Jess Schaben, who is a senior outside hitter. Schaben finished the game with eight kills and digs.
In the first set, Iowa State won 25-17 and outpaced the Coyotes in several key areas.
The Cyclones had four total blocks in the first set to South Dakota’s zero and the Cyclones also had 13 kills, a .667 hit percentage and 15 digs compared to nine kills, a .029 kill percentage and 11 digs for South Dakota.
The starters for Iowa State to begin the set were Schaben, Eleanor Holthaus, Avery Rhodes, freshman Brooke Andersen, Hali Hillegas at libero and Piper Mauck at setter.
Mauck finished the set with 11 assists.
To begin the second set, Iowa State chose to start the same group, but exchanged Mauck for freshman Jenna Brandt, who had 14 assists in the second set, at setter.
South Dakota’s offense began to flow more efficiently in the second set as the Coyotes won the set 25-22 and had 15 kills, 14 assists and 20 digs.
In contrast, Iowa State had 15 kills, 15 digs and only had one block.
Iowa State then took control of the third set with a final score of 25-17.
Mauck returned at setter for the Cyclones and registered 14 assists. Altogether, Iowa State had 16 kills and 21 digs to outpace South Dakota who had seven kills and 18 digs to pair with seven total assists as a team.
Iowa State then took the fourth set with a score of 25-13.
In that set, Brandt was in at setter and had 12 assists. South Dakota had seven as a team that fourth set.
The Cyclones pulled away with 15 kills, 19 digs and three blocks versus the Coyotes’ eight kills and 24 digs.
As a team, South Dakota finished with zero blocks while Iowa State had seven total.
Iowa State’s first regular season matchup is on August 24 versus Ole Miss in the Iowa State Challenge, but the Cyclones do have a intrasquad scrimmage on August 18 to tune up.
