Iowa State soccer comes up short in second match of the year
August 19, 2018
In the second match of the year for the Cyclone soccer team, they played a tough Missouri team and came up just short due to a sudden-death own goal. Missouri won by a 2-1 final score.
The first half of Sunday’s affair with the Tigers had a lot of scoring chances for both sides, but nothing to show for it. Iowa State had a few tough shots on goal, but its most promising chance, was called back because sophomore forward Courtney Powell was determined to be offside. The Cyclones had a couple more scoring opportunities led by senior midfielder Emily Steil.
Missouri had no luck against Iowa State’s goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg in the first half either, but they came very close to breaking the 0-0 tie late in the first half. Freshman forward Blythe Beldner hit the post, which was the start of multiple momentum-shifting drives for the Tigers.
After the teams switched sides, things began to pick up. In the 56th minute, the Tigers struck first when Beldner found a lane down the sideline and struck a beautiful cross to fellow freshman forward Skye Kingsley who got just enough of it to put it in the back of the net with her head. Iowa State answered in the 80th minute when junior midfielder Hannah Cade lobbed a free kick into the box for redshirt junior midfielder Kasey Opfer who also used her head to score.
During the second overtime period, after multiple scoring chances for either side, Iowa State scored an own goal that resulted in the end of the match in the 104th minute.
The Cyclones look to bounce back as they play Northwestern in West Lafayette, Indiana on Friday, August 24.
