Need to Know: Fun activities on Campus

At Iowa State there are many activities students can take part in to make their experience on campus more enjoyable. These activities are regularly organized and hosted by either the Student Activities Center or Student Union Board, but both offices have other tasks as well.

Student Activities Center and Student Union Board

The SAC is an office that helps plan and coordinate Arts and Entertainment events at the University, conduct leadership development and plan community service programs. Additionally, they provide guidance and resources for the student organizations on Campus. The Student Union Board, or SUB, is a subset of SAC that assists in planning events.

Some of the events organized by SUB and SAC are:

Welcome Fest and Welcome Week:

Starting Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, and going through the week students will be able to check out local businesses, community organizations and ISU departments for free at the Great Hall in the Memorial Union.

There will be loads of free stuff including a concert featuring lovelytheband and Brett Young.

ISU After Dark:

ISU After Dark is a free late night event that takes place three times a semester in the Memorial Union. Students can come in and take part in a variety of activities including but not limited to Bowling & Billiards, Karaoke, Photo Booth, create-a-critter, free panda express and bingo.

The first ISU After Dark of this year will also feature Pete Davidson from Saturday Night Live.

ClubFest:

ClubFest is an opportunity for students to browse through many clubs and organizations at Iowa State. Located on Central Campus and happening Sep. 5, a large number of Iowa State’s student organizations will be there with informational handouts, large displays, demonstrations and giveaways to highlight their club and recruit new members.

Cyclone Cinema:

The Cyclone Cinema committee is responsible for showcasing a variety of genres in the film industry, ranging from horror and comedy to action and drama. Each week, Thursday through Sunday, at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., different movies play at Cyclone Cinema starting with Avengers:Infinity War this Fall. The movies play in carver 101 and are free of charge.

M-Shop:

The Maintenance Shop is an on campus music and entertainment venue. It is situated right in the Memorial Union and hosts lots of different events like Improv, comedy and concerts. It is also home to the in-house comedy group Grandma Mojo’s Moonshine Revival.

Arts and The Workspace:-

Includes Pottery, woodworking, walk-in crafts and many other classes for students. Located in the basement of the Memorial Union, the workspace offers discounts for students and is sometimes free.

Cybowl & Billiards:-

Eight bowling lanes and plenty of billiards tables are availible in the Memorial Union for you and your friends to enjoy some friendly competition. On Friday nights, you can even try your luck under black lights for the extra challenge of cosmic bowling.

It costs $2.50 for ISU students before 5 p.m. and $3.50 after 5 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday it is $4.00 after 5 p.m.

Activities by Recreational Services:-

Outdoor Recreational program:-

The ORP offers workshops for learning how to climb walls indoor and outside, maintain your bike, learn to cook outside and many more. They also organize trips for students almost every weekend and 5-10 extended trips per semester.

This December they will be organizing their first ever international trip to Costa Rica. Be sure to contact recreational services for more information.

Intramurals Program:

A great set of activities to make friends, intramurals can help you stay in shape while having fun. Some of the activities you can find are badminton, soccer, football, poker, racquetball, tennis and even quidditch.

Group Fitness Classes:

A great opportunity to work out between classes or with friends. Some of them are kickboxing, cycling, zumba, insanity, functional training and jump fitness.

Facilities:

State Gym, Beyer Hall and Lied Recreational Services are open on most days and offer a variety of equipment and activities to take part in to keep fit. State Gym and Beyer Hall also offer pools for fun or for fitness.

Personal Training Program:

Certified Student Trainers can help you achieve your fitness goals while guiding you through correct technique and can help you push your limits. This is one of the programs that isn’t free. Rates and more information can be found online.

Ice Arena:

Ames/ISU Ice Arena is an ice arena and recreational sport facility located south of Campus and is owned and operated by the Ames Parks & Rec Department and Iowa State University.
