Editor’s note: This is part six of a 10-part series breaking down the Iowa State wrestling roster weight-by-weight. While athletes switching to different weights is inevitable, for the sake of simplicity and consistency, this series will base the weights off of past weights.

The 165-pound weight was a revolving door for Iowa State last season. Skyler St. John and Brady Jennings received a bulk of the starts at 165, but neither maintained the starting spot.

The job heading into 2018-19 looks to be anyone’s to grab, but St. John and Jennings appear to be the frontrunners.

Skyler St. John

St. John went 2-5 in dual matches (one of the wins coming via forfeit) and wrestled in multiple tournaments. After an up-and-down regular season, St. John was penciled in at 165 for the Big 12 Tournament.

St. John lost to West Virginia’s Nick Kiussus, 6-4, and Oklahoma’s Dawaylon Barnes, 10-2. St. John’s only win came by a medical forfeit.

After an inconsistent season in his first year at Iowa State, St. John will still be in the mix at 165. With 165 as one of the weaker weights for the Cyclones, Iowa State could benefit from a breakout season from St. John.

Brady Jennings

Jennings began the season at 157-pounds but jumped to 165-pounds by the end of the season. At 165, Jennings rattled off seven wins in two tournaments, including an 8-0 win over St. John.

Against Oklahoma, Jennings got his opportunity. The Sooners’ Barnes pinned Jennings in 6:17. Jennings received the start against Oklahoma State in the same weekend. Oklahoma State’s Chandler Rogers pinned Jennings in 1:07.

In his final match of the year, Jennings got back in the win column with a 7-2 win over North Dakota State’s Andrew Fogarty.

Getting pinned twice didn’t do Jennings any favors, but the win over St. John and Fogarty gave a glimpse of Jennings’ potential. As was the case last season, Jennings and St. John will likely be the options at 165.

Taylan Entriken

Entriken began the season at 165 and shifted to 174 late in the season. In his freshman season, Entriken redshirted and wrestled in only tournaments.

He compiled a 17-11 record with a 2-2 record against teammates. At the Flash Flanagan Open, Entriken lost to Iowa State’s Colin Strickland, 3-2. At the Willie Myers Open, Entriken beat Tucker Morrison, 1-0, but lost to Hank Swalla, 3-2.

At the Sioux City Dave Edmunds Open, Entriken defeated Luke Entzel, 4-0.

Whether or not Entriken is at 165 or 174, the redshirt freshman will get another year to develop and potentially compete in a dual meet.

Grant Stotts

Stotts decided to join his brother, Austin, at Iowa State after graduating from Valley High School in West Des Moines.

In his senior season at Valley, Stotts finished fourth at the state tournament. Prior to that, he had a state title and two runner-up finishes.

Stotts will likely redshirt, but he’ll be middleweight for Iowa State teams down the road.
