Much like its Cap City League rivals Hannah Homes, Hinterland will be relying a lot on perimeter scoring this summer.

With the first pick in the Iowa State draft this season, Hinterland couldn’t have had an easier selection.

It swung for the fences and made the choice to bring in 2017 Cap City League MVP Marial Shayok. Shayok led the Cap City League in scoring last summer and brings size at 6-foot-6.

Shayok spent last year on the bench after transferring from Virginia in 2017. In a bench role with the Cavaliers, he averaged 8.9 points per game on 47.7 percent shooting. Shayok will have one year of eligibility left.

With the 12th pick of the Iowa State draft Hinterland took sophomore walk-on Eric Steyer. Steyer, the son of Iowa State women’s basketball assistant coach Jodi Steyer. Steyer is an Ames native and an Ames High graduate.

In his senior season with the Little Cyclones, Steyer averaged 10.9 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting and made 38 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Steyer is the Cyclones’ first walk-on since the 2016-17 season.

With its picks in the Drake round of the draft, Hinterland went for size with the addition of Antonio Pilipovic, a 6-foot-8 forward from Cologne, Germany. Pilipovic appeared in five games for the Bulldogs last season and averaged 1.4 minutes per appearance.

With its second pick of the Drake round, Hinterland picked Drake newcomer and Siena transfer Roman Penn. Penn, a 5-foot-11 guard, will likely run the point for Hinterland.

Penn averaged 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and three assists per game with the Saints last season. Penn transferred after Siena coach Jimmy Pastos resigned while being investigated for alleged abusive conduct.

In the open rounds, Hinterland took Jordan Johnson, a new addition for Rogers State University.

Johnson, a national champion at Southwestern Community College, is a 3-point shooter who will provide spacing and experience.

Teyontae Jenkins, a Des Moines native and one-time Grand View commit, is a 5-foot-9 guard and a solid 3-point shooter who played for second-place finishers Doerrfeld Promotions last season.

Kylique Lipscombe is a 6-foot-4 guard-forward who played for Cap City League champions Sparta Waste Services last season.

Ray Miller, a DMACC guard, averaged 9.7 points per game as a freshman last season for the Bears.

Dillon Carlson, an Ankeny High School senior, averaged 17 points per game in his junior season for the Hawks.

Hinterland’s final roster spot was filled by Graceland University guard Austin Mona.
