Letter: Hubbell’s donations are suspect

The State Capitol Building’s golden dome makes it easy to spot when nearing Iowa’s largest city.

There is an initial disarming about gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell’s explanation on why he donated to Republican State Representative Peter Cownie. Wrapped in family friendship, the donation appears alright for many.

Hubbell said he has known Peter since he was a boy and the two families have a long relationship. He also said he did not regret the decision. He also said he might donate to Peter again.

While appearing to embrace the best ideals of friendship and bipartisan cooperation, Hubbell’s donation is an act not moored to principled kinship with the Democratic Party.

For instance, it would be no surprise to Hubbell that Cownie voted for drastically curtailing a woman’s choice regarding abortion. As a lifelong friend Hubbell had to have known Cownie’s long standing position on this and other positions Cownie took over the years as a legislator.

Can you be friends with someone without having to destroy the best interests of the Democratic Party?

Hubbell is unable to do that. That is dangerous for our Democratic Party.
