After one inning, Iowa State women’s softball believed that a miracle upset could be in the cards.

Uncharacteristic errors from No. 1 seed Oklahoma allowed two Cyclones to score in the bottom of the first, before a two-run double from junior Sally Woolpert gave Iowa State a shock 4-0 lead over the defending national champions.

Despite a tough effort, though, the Sooners were just too much, and Iowa State fell 9-6 on Friday night. The Cyclones came into Friday night’s game after  their loss to Texas earlier in the day.

The Cyclones fell to 23-32 on the season.

Iowa State gave up three runs in the second inning and one in the third to the Sooners, but through four innings the game was tied at 4.

In the top of the fifth, Oklahoma broke through. Three runs gave the Sooners the lead for the first time all game. The Cyclones had a chance to respond, but Woolpert was left stranded on third base.

Through six innings, the Cyclones were still within reach, but Oklahoma added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and the lead was 9-4.

Iowa State had one more chance to pull the upset, and a two-run homer by sophomore Logan Schaben cut the lead back to three, but the Sooners held firm and forced the final out.

Iowa State will play Oklahoma State in the fifth-place game Saturday at 11 a.m.
