Around the Bases: Texas Tech
April 22, 2018
Single
The Cyclones are two games from tying their overall win record from last year. During the 2016-17 season, the Cyclones went 23-35 overall, going 6-12 in the Big 12. This season alone, under first year head coach Jamie Pinkerton, the Cyclones are 21-23 and 3-9 in the Big 12.
With seven games left to go, the Cyclones have a good change of tying, or increasing their winning record from last year. Six of the seven games left are Big 12 games, along with the Cy-Hawk game.
Second
Sophomore Logan Schaben racked up her fifth home run of the season, and two on the weekend against Texas Tech. The second-year player out of Portsmouth, Iowa tied her season-highs in hits, and snatched consecutive home runs this weekend.
Schaben got off to a slow start this, but has steadily increased her hitting efforts, getting her average to a .277 from the .125 recorded earlier in the season. In this series alone, she managed to get a hit in every game. She had two hits in the Cyclones’ 7-5 victory on Saturday.
She achieved her season-high in RBIs this weekend, going for two in Saturday’s victory. Along with that, she also ran in for a score in every game this weekend.
Triple
In fashion, the Cyclones now control the tie-breaker over the Red Raiders in the Big 12, should there be one. With the softball team going 2-1 this weekend, the Cyclones now have three victories in conference — two against Texas Tech and one against Oklahoma State.
Why is this important? Well, the Red Raiders also achieved a victory over the Cowgirls, resulting in a potential tie in the Big 12 standings following the conclusion of the regular season.
Now the Cyclones control their own destiny in the conference with Baylor, Kansas and Iowa still on deck. Kansas is the only team in the Big 12 to not have a conference victory. Baylor is 7-6 in conference play, with losses against Oklahoma (three) and Oklahoma State (three).
With a victory against the Lady Bears, Iowa State could own any potential tie-breakers, should the situation come to it heading into the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
Home Run.
While Sunday’s outing resulted in a loss, the Cyclones got their first series victory of the season.
This series saw the Cyclones overcome close calls, and also came back from large single-inning deficits. All of these games were a product of two runs going either way and now Iowa State is coming in with a lot of momentum for the Cy-Hawk Series.
The Cy-Hawk game will help decide a winner of the Cy-Hawk series, with the Hawkeyes ahead 13-10 at the moment.
