Three Takeaways: Day one of the Big 12 wrestling tournament
March 3, 2018
After a full day of Big 12 matches concluded, the Cyclones failed to field finalists at any of the 10 weights.
Iowa State won’t have any Big 12 champions, but the program has a chance to earn a handful of NCAA Tournament bids.
Colbray burnt in sudden victory matches
Redshirt freshman 197-pounder Sam Colbray entered Saturday with the No. 5 seed. The Big 12 received four automatic qualifying bids for the NCAA Tournament, meaning the top-four in the 197-pound bracket advances to Cleveland, Ohio, for the NCAA Tournament.
Sitting at the No. 5 seed, Colbray looked to jump at least one spot and claim an NCAA Tournament berth.
Colbray started the tournament out on the right foot, delivering a 5-2 win over Wyoming’s Luke Paine.
In the quarterfinals, Colbray met a familiar opponent: Jacob Smith. Smith — West Virginia’s 197-pounder — wrestled Colbray inside Hilton Coliseum on Jan. 21.
During the regular season meeting between the two, the third period ended in a 5-5 tie. Both wrestlers appeared heavily fatigued, but Colbray wore Smith down and forced a stalling call against Smith in sudden victory.
Colbray won 6-5.
On Saturday, Colbray looked to emulate that performance and put himself in a good position to snag an automatic qualifying bid.
Colbray and Smith performed as evenly as they did in the first match, knotting the score at 2-2 after three periods. Sudden victory followed suit with the score remaining tied after 55 seconds.
With three seconds left, Smith shot and connected for a takedown to win 4-2, sending Colbray to the consolation bracket.
After losing the heartbreaker to Smith, Colbray looked for redemption against Fresno State’s Josh Hokit. Hokit — also a member of the Fresno State football team — defeated Colbray in a dual this season via a 7-2 win.
Just as Smith got his revenge on Colbray, Colbray sought out his revenge over Hokit. Similar to Colbray’s previous match, this match was sent to sudden victory. Hokit picked up a takedown and a 3-1 win in sudden victory, ending Colbray’s season.
Jarrett Degen primed to earn an NCAA bid tomorrow
Degen, the No. 4 seeded 149-pounder was one piece of Iowa State’s team expected to make a run at an automatic qualifying bid.
After Degen received a first-round bye, the redshirt freshman defeated Sam Turner from Wyoming in an 8-5 decision.
Next, Degen was pitted against No. 1 seeded Max Thomsen from Northern Iowa. Thomsen handled Degen, winning 11-5.
After being bounced to the consolation bracket, Degen will match up with Dane Robbins of Air Force. If Degen wins, he’ll clinch an NCAA bid and a spot in the third-place match.
A loss to Robbins would mean Degen winds up in the fifth place match, a match that Degen would have to win to advance to Cleveland.
Dane Pestano and Marcus Harrington stay in the mix
Unlike Degen, Pestano at 184-pounds and Harrington at heavyweight are working with less bids available for the NCAA Tournament.
Pestano — the No. 7 seed — has to secure a top-four place, and Harrington — the No. 2 seed — has to earn a top-three finish.
Harrington received a first-round bye, but the redshirt junior faced a tough challenge in his first match. Northern Iowa’s Carter Isley faced Harrington. Isley and Harrington met three times prior to Saturday’s match with Isley winning two of the three matches.
Three points was all Harrington needed, as the heavyweight edged Isley out, 3-2. Harrington faced No. 3 AJ Nevills from Fresno State next.
Nevills fended off Harrington, winning by pin in sudden victory. Tomorrow Harrington needs to win two straight matches to earn an NCAA bid.
Pestano, somewhat of an underdog at 184-pounds, began his day with an 8-5 win over North Dakota State’s Charley Popp. After the win, Pestano ran into No. 2 Martin Mueller from South Dakota State.
Mueller won 7-5, putting Pestano in the consolation bracket. Pestano heated up in the consolation bracket, adding two wins to end his night. If Pestano can knock off Oklahoma State’s Keegan Moore tomorrow, the senior will be catapulted to the third-place match.
