Iowa State goes 1-1 on the opening day of the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic

Iowa State loses first game in a pitcher’s duel against Northwestern. Wildcats 1, Cyclone 0
A classic pitcher’s duel. Zero to zero back and forth each inning. Until the very end.
The Cyclones took the mound with right-handed pitcher Savannah Sanders. It was Sanders fifth start of the season. She is 3-4 this season.
Sanders pitched 6.1 innings, giving up only five hits. She had one strikeout in the game and only one error. She only gave up one run, but that run decided the game.
The Northwestern Wildcats took the mound with pitcher Morgan Newport. Newport dominated through seven innings only giving up two hits.
It wasn’t until the seventh inning when the offense showed up for the Cyclones. In the top of the seventh inning, the Cyclones had the bases loaded with two outs but they were unable to convert.
The Cyclones lost the game due to a walk-off double from the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh.
Iowa State gets their bats going against Lipscomb. Cyclones 6, Bisons 1
The Cyclones got the start they were looking for from junior right-handed pitcher Emma Hylen. Hylen pitched a complete game only giving up one run. She had five strikeouts in the game.
The bats heated up early for the Cyclones. In the top of the first inning, sophomore infielder Sami Williams hit a leadoff double down the right field line. Junior first basemen Sally Woolpert then hit an RBI single to left to score Williams and give the Cyclones the 1-0 lead.
Iowa State missed out on a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the first inning, but they headed to the top of the first with a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning, Williams hit a solo home run to left center making the score 2-0 Cyclones. It was her third home run of the season.
Lipscomb did all their damage in the bottom of the second inning. The Bisons hit an RBI single to right field making the score 2-1 but the Cyclones help on to the lead.
In the top of the third inning, it was junior catcher Kaylee Bosworth’s turn to get in on the action. Bosworth hit a solo home run to right center giving the Cyclones the 3-1 lead. It was Bosworth’s fourth home run of the season.
Bosworth did more damage in the top of the fourth inning. She hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Williams and Woolpert. The Cyclones led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Williams hit an RBI single to center field to score senior right fielder Kaila Konz. Giving the Cyclones the 6-1 lead.
The Cyclones beat the Bisons 6-1.
Williams and Bosworth both had outstanding performances. Bosworth went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Williams went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.
The Cyclones will play Lipscomb again tomorrow at 2 p.m. and then Houston at 7 p.m.
