The Iowa State women’s track and field team will have two athletes at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Texas A&M will host the event in College Station, Texas, on March 9-10.

The Cyclone women will be represented by senior Jhoanmy Luque in the long jump and triple jump. Junior Jasmine Staebler will be holding it down for the distance team as she runs in the 800-meter run.

“Both of them have had amazing seasons this year,” assistant coach Andrea Grove-McDonough said about the two Cyclones. “They both will represent this team and this university very well at the NCAA Indoor Championships.”

Luque has had a fantastic senior season in the long jump and triple jump. The eight-time All-American shined at her final Big 12 Indoor Championship, claiming her second straight sweep of the long jump and triple jump.

She currently ranks No. 5 in the triple jump and No. 8 in the long jump in the NCAA. Luque recorded season-highs of 21-1 1/4 (6.43m) in the long jump and 44-4 (13.51m) in the triple jump this past weekend in Ames. The 2017 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Region Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year will finish her campaign next week.

“The Big 12’s was another great experience,” Luque said. “I was able to defend my titles and get great marks on both of my jumps. For the NCAAs I want to focus on getting first. I will enjoy going out there and wearing cardinal and gold for the last time this weekend. I am excited to be participating with Jasmine again, I know she will give her all.”

Staebler is returning to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800 meter for the second straight season. She goes into the competition as the No. 9 seed with her season best finish of 2:03.59 which she ran at the Razorback Invitational in January.

At the Big 12 Indoor Championship, Staebler ran herself to a silver medal finish in the 800 meter for the second straight year last weekend at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. She also added a gold medal in the distance medley relay, running anchor for the Cyclones. At last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships, Staebler finished sixth in the 800 meter to earn First Team All-America honors.

“I am excited to compete,” Staebler said. “I would love to make the finals once again. The Big 12s was exciting and I am hoping to use that momentum to carry me into nationals. I love Iowa State, the support system is fantastic.

“I would be happy to become an All-American again. I am lucky to be participating in this event with Jhoanmy. We have both been here before and are ready to wear the cardinal and gold.”

All competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships will be streamed live on ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU.
