Cyclone softball is back here in Ames, and today the Cyclones dropped their home opener.

The Cyclones came into the opener with Brianna Weilbacher on the mound, but cycled through all their pitchers in one game.

Iowa State came out and gave up three runs in the first inning of play, putting themselves in a deficit to begin the game.

Texas’ Taylor Ellsworth would then bring the Longhorns to a 4-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the second inning.

The Cyclones would put in Savannah Sanders for Weilbacher.

Following the leadoff single for Taylor Nearad, Nycholle Antillon would come in and bring the Cyclones back into the game with a 2-run home run to left center.

Texas would respond with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning, placing the Longhorns 6-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth inning, the Cyclones would score two runs on a Texas miscue caused by Cyclone catcher Kaylee Bosworth. That brought the game to a two-run deficit for the Cardinal and Gold.

Iowa State would then bring the game to a single-run deficit when Logan Schaben hit her second home run of the season to bring the score 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth.

However, the Longhorns would respond with the final scoring of the day when Janae Jefferson would hit a solo-run to bring the score 7-5 and Paige von Sprecken doubled to left field, scoring in Ki’Audra Hayter.

Emma Hylen came to relieve Weilbacher at the end of seventh, after Weilbacher was placed back in the top of sixth.

The Cyclones will play the rest of their series against Texas tomorrow in a double header starting at 12:30 p.m.
