Cyclone offense sputters in loss at Texas

Iowa State (11-8, 2-6 Big 12) fell at Texas (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) on Monday night by a final score of 73-57.
Kerwin Roach started hot for Texas, scoring nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point range in the first few minutes. He scored nine of Texas’ first 11 points.
The Longhorns used hot shooting and strong interior defense from freshman Mo Bamba to get out to a 36-21 lead with just over three minutes to play in the first half.
For Iowa State, not much was working offensively. The Cyclones shot just 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from the floor with seven turnovers in the first half as Texas took a 38-29 lead into the locker room. Cameron Lard led the way with 10 points and five rebounds in the first half.
Texas entered the game shooting just 30 percent on 3-pointers, ranking them 338th out of 351 Division I teams. But against Iowa State on Monday, the Longhorns hit 8-of-20 (40 percent) from beyond the arc.
After falling behind by 16 points, Iowa State used an 8-0 run to get within eight with under four minutes to play.
Ultimately, Texas’ ability to hit free throws won the game. The Longhorns hit free throws as Iowa State tried to mount a comeback, giving Iowa State its sixth Big 12 loss.
Lindell Wigginton and Nick Weiler-Babb led the Cyclones with 15 points apiece. Lard had 12 points and 12 rebounds to complete a double-double.
Iowa State is back in action at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday against Tennessee.
