Iowa State wins first dual of the Kevin Dresser era against Oregon State

Opening the dual at 197-pounds, Sam Colbray faced No. 11 Corey Griego. Colbray was defeated by a 7-1 decision which gave Oregon State a 3-0 lead. During the match, Griego had an incredible 5:07 in riding time.

The next match, Oregon State extended their lead to 7-0 when heavyweight Amar Dhesi earned a 13-4 major decision over Marcus Harrington. The much larger Dhesi controlled the match and had 4:02 in riding time.

With Jakob Allison out with injury, Iowa State did not have a wrestler to compete at 125-pounds against Ronnie Bresser, who is ranked No. 10 per InterMat. Iowa State was forced to forfeit which allowed Oregon State to take a 13-0 lead.

Wrestling at 133-pounds for Iowa State was Markus Simmons, who was able to secure a 5-0 decision against Devan Turner.

With Oregon State leading 13-3, Iowa State’s No. 19 141-pounder Kanen Storr needed bonus points against unranked Jack Hathaway to close the lead for his team.

Storr did just that and had 2:50 in riding time in a 9-1 major decision. Storr’s performance helped the Cyclones close in the score to 13-7.

After earning a tech fall Friday against Northern Colorado, Jarrett Degen kept shining for the Cyclones and earned another win. This time 17-2 against Josh Reyes and narrowed Oregon State’s lead to 13-12.

With a chance to take the lead for the Iowa State, Chase Straw faced Hunter Willits in a tough match that was extended into overtime tied 3-3.

Both wrestlers seemed exhausted, but Straw was able to secure a takedown and win the match. The win gave the Cyclones their first lead of the dual putting them up 15-13.

At the beginning of the season, Skyler St. John, brother of assistant coach Derek St. John, injured his knee at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open on Nov. 4 and hasn’t wrestled since.

Against Billy Bigelow, St. John fell 3-2 and Oregon State then was ahead 16-15.

Danny Bush then took the mat for Iowa State at 174-pounds. Bush was was able to pin Myles Terry in 5:17. Iowa State then was ahead 21-16.

Within striking distance of the first dual victory of the season, Iowa State’s Dane Pestano faced Oregon State’s Seth McLeod. Pestano was then able to secure a late takedown in the third period to go up 4-3 where he rode out McLeod for the rest of the match.

Pestano’s decision gave the Cyclones a 24-16 final score and the win marks the first all season and first of the Kevin Dresser era. The last time the Cyclones won a dual was Nov. 26, 2016 against Northern Colorado.

Iowa State’s record is currently 1-4 and 0-2 in the Big 12.

The Cyclones next challenge is the Virginia Duals taking place on Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13.
