149-pounder Gavin DeWitt announced Thursday, January 11, that he has been granted a release from the Iowa State wrestling team via Instagram.

DeWitt, a redshirt freshmen, began the year as the starter at 149 pounds and his notable appearances included the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open where he earned first place and a dual versus Drexel. DeWitt lost that match 6-5.

After DeWitt’s initial appearances, Virginia Tech transfer and redshirt freshman Jarrett Degen emerged as Iowa State’s starter 149 pounds. Degen was injured at the beginning of the season, but has since compiled a 4-0 dual record highlighted by two tech falls in his last two matches.

DeWitt was also entrenched behind backup Dante Rodriguez.

DeWitt has not designated a destination to transfer to, but noted that he is exploring his options.

This season, three Cyclones including DeWitt have left the program. The other two are 125-pounders Danny Vega and Jonathan Marmolejo.

The departures have tested Iowa State’s depth and so far only one wrestler, Rutgers freshman Alex Mackall, has announced their intent to transfer to Iowa State. Mackall won’t be eligible until next season.
