Buchanan Hall shooter scare, not related to Stanton Ave. drive-by

Willa Colville

Iowa State University Police Department did a run through of Buchanan residence hall Monday evening.

After receiving reports of an active shooter in the building, ISUPD came to investigate the situation.

Some residents reported taking instruction from their CA to “hide in their bathroom and stay silent.” Though a few residents may have done this, according to Brittney Rutherford of the Department of Residents, it was not by the instruction of their CA.

“An unidentified resident called a CA and asked if there was an active shooter in the building. The CA said there was not a shooter and may have explained what precautions would be taken if there was one,” Rutherford explained. “Rumors spread throughout social media and group messages last night. I can confirm that no CA instructed residents to [hide in their bathrooms and stay silent].”

According to an email sent to Buchanan residents by hall director, Kirten Hauge, students were in no immediate danger.

“As would be the typical response in a situation like this, ISU Police responded immediately and searched the building,” Hauge’s email read. “They determined that there was no active shooter and that there was never a threat to the Buchanan community. ISU Police has also made it clear that there was never a threat to campus at any point last night.”

Talia Rosazza, resident of Buchanan Hall, felt that Hauge’s email helped clarify the events that occurred last night. Though she is a resident of the hall, Roaszza first heard about police searching the building through social media.

“I was a little scared but that was all. I feel as though the officer and the staff in buchanan probably did as much as they could because they didn’t want to confuse anyone,” Rosazza stated.

ISUPD says that this incident is not related to the drive-by shooting which occurred on Stanton Ave. the same night.
