November 19, 2017
Iowa State defeated Boise State 75-64 Sunday night to win its third straight game and clinch the Puerto Rico Tip-Off title.
The game started off well for the Cyclones (3-2, 0-0 Big 12), who opened up with a 14-7 lead. Boise State (4-1, 0-0 Mountain West) battled back, but could not get over the hump.
The Cyclones extended their lead to as many as 18 points, and that’s how much the margin was at halftime as Iowa State led, 39-21 at the break.
Guard Nick Weiler-Babb continued his streak of strong games. In the first half, Weiler-Babb put up four points, three rebounds and seven assists.
Freshman Lindell Wigginton led the team in scoring and rebounding early. He had 10 points and eight rebounds at halftime.
By the first timeout of the second half, Iowa State extended the lead to 24 points.
Boise State slowly chipped away, bringing the deficit back down to four points with 2:33 to play, but the Cyclones were able to hold on for the victory.
Senior guard Donovan Jackson hit a key pull-up jumper with just over two minutes to play to make it a six-point game. On the next possession he lost his defender, pump-faked another one and nailed a 3-pointer.
Jackson finished with 26 points to lead the Cyclones. He also set the all-time scoring record at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off with 76 points over the three-day tournament.
Additionally, Weiler-Babb was named MVP of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
