One of Hugo Bolanos’ first memories in the United States was trying to play with his classmates at Crestview Elementary School. Back in Mexico, kids would throw rocks at each other, so when Hugo, who didn’t speak English at the time, saw rocks at the base of a climbing wall, he picked a handful up and threw them at other kids to try to get them to play.
One of Hugo Bolanos’ first memories in the United States was playing on the playground in elementary school. “I tried making friends as soon as I got here, but the way you play games in Mexico is completely different than the way you play here. In Mexico, as weird as it sounds, we’d throw rocks at each other and you try to dodge them and it would be kind of like dodgeball. I remember I grabbed some rocks and threw them at some kids to intitiate “Hey, do you want to play?” but I got in trouble.”
