Emily Clement: Assistant digital editor of content
October 2, 2017
Hey! My name is Emily Clement and I am the assistant digital editor of content at the Iowa State Daily.
My job at the Daily is a lot different than most people’s. I do little to no reporting and look at more numbers than I can handle some days. It doesn’t exactly seem like the normal newsroom job, but trust me, it’s definitely the coolest!
A normal day consists of sending an email consisting of the top 10 stories, meaning the highest number of pageviews, from the previous day.
I also create or help create the Daily Dose every Sunday through Thursday. This means that my team and I gather all of the stories, write all of the captions, insert all of the pictures, collect all of the events and of course, come up with the perfect joke of the day. It seems like an easy task, but trust me, a lot of work goes into putting it together every day.
With that in mind, everyone at the Daily, my team especially, would love for you to open it and check out the awesome stories we create and include in the Daily Dose. We just recently added an option on our website for anyone to sign up to receive them, so tell everyone you know!
A lot of my job is helping everyone else in the newsroom understand the reception of their own stories and I really enjoy that! I spend a lot of time behind a computer, but I also get to talk to a lot of people around the newsroom which is great!
As a PR student, I’m doing exactly what I want to be doing: heading the e-newsletter, looking over analytics, handling some digital-only content and adding in a little event planning and social media.
The moral of the story, you don’t have to be a journalist to work in a newsroom!
