2017 Gridiron Staff Picks: Week 8
October 16, 2017
Every week during the year, Brian Mozey, Aaron Marner, Jack MacDonald and a special guest make their predictions for the Iowa State football game. Here are their predictions for the Cyclones’ week eight game against Texas Tech at 11 a.m. on FS1.

Brian Mozey, Sports Editor (5-1)
Winner: Texas Tech
Score: 49-38
This weekend will be two dominant offenses squaring off to have a scoring parade. Texas Tech has averaged 45 points a game this season and Iowa State has averaged 36 points per game. It’ll be a high scoring game and will more than likely reach the 68-point over.
Iowa State has been on a roll with beating then-No. 3 Oklahoma and dominating Kansas the past two weeks, but that roll will come to an end this weekend. Texas Tech will be too explosive of an offense to stop and Iowa State won’t be able to come back from it.
It’ll be a good game from start to finish, but the Red Raiders will prevail.
Aaron Marner, Assistant Sports Editor (3-3)
Winner: Texas Tech
Score: 41-38
Iowa State has a huge opportunity this week. With a win, the Cyclones would likely move into the AP top-25 for the first time since 2005.
Iowa State’s on a roll right now. The Cyclones have a nice winning run of six wins in their last nine games, dating back to the Kansas game last November.
Honestly, I think Iowa State is the better team between these two (or, at the very least, it’s close). But I’ve seen too many Cyclone teams inexplicably fall short — *ahem* — like 2004 and 2005. Iowa State hasn’t started 5-2 or better since 2002, so I’m siding with recent history and picking against the Cyclones.
Give me Texas Tech in a close game that Iowa State loses on a bad turnover or a missed call.
Jack MacDonald, Assistant Sports Editor (3-3)
Winner: Texas Tech
Score: 38-27
Last time I picked against Iowa State I clearly miss calculated that one and they ended up beating then-No. 3 Oklahoma. This week will be different for two reasons.
1. Iowa State has not been over .500 after playing more than four Big 12 games since 2005. This isn’t the year where they match that feat and go 3-1 through four games.
2. Texas Tech has an offense that can score at will. The only taste the Cyclones have had of that this season was against Oklahoma and they gave up 31 points. If the Iowa State defense can shut down the Red Raiders, then maybe I’ll be wrong again, but the Cyclones’ offense doesn’t have the firepower with Kyle Kempt at quarterback to win a track meet.
Although I am picking against Iowa State, don’t be surprised if they pull out a win (Just saying this so I have an excuse if they do win).

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about sports, especially football – I had to look up past scores to see if these numbers were even possible and how many points a touchdown was – don’t laugh.
Although I’m no expert, I’m still pretty confident that Iowa State is going to win this weekend.
They’ve won the last two games and I think that they’ve gained some momentum throughout the season so far. Even though the Kansas game was a pretty easy win, I think the confidence level rose at least a little. The game will also be at Texas Tech and Iowa State has won every away game so far this year, so that’s probably a good sign.
Also, Iowa State’s mascot is so much cooler than Texas Tech’s and that obviously makes a difference.
