Iowa State soccer scores twice to stomp UMKC
September 3, 2017
The Iowa State women’s soccer team took its chances and turned a disappointing first half into a resounding victory.
In another strong defensive display, the Cyclones found an offensive spark in the second half and finished off the weekend with a second straight clean sheet and a 2-0 win over the UMKC Kangaroos.
The Cyclones and Kangaroos played a scoreless first half, with the Kangaroos outshooting the Cyclones 9-4. Freshman goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg had two saves.
Iowa State asserted control of the game in the second half, creating chances and shutting down the UMKC attack.
Iowa State scored in the 73rd minute with a goal from freshman forward Courtney Powell. Junior left midfielder Brooke Tasker was credited with the assist. In the 76th minute, the Cyclones doubled their tally with a header from junior central midfielder Emily Steil off of a cross from sophomore attacking midfielder Hannah Cade.
UMKC has 16 shots to Iowa State’s 15, but it mattered little as the Cyclones scored with both of their shots on target.
Up next for the Cyclones is a trip to California to play Cal State Fullerton on Friday, September 8 at 9 p.m.
