Board of Regents to discuss asking for more state funding Monday
September 19, 2017
Iowa State will receive $5 million for resident undergraduate financial aid if a Board of Regents appropriation request is approved.
The Board of Regents released a proposed request for a 2.6 percent increase in state funding Monday. The request will be discussed at the board’s Sept. 25 meeting.
If the request is approved, $12 million will go toward higher education, $5 million will go to University of Iowa and $2 million will go to University of Northern Iowa.
For all three of the regent universities, the money will go toward financial aid.
Josh Lehman, the board’s senior communication director, said this is an effort by the board to address concerns about affordability that were heard during the tuition task force report at their Sept. 7 meeting.
This comes after the state cut funding for higher education by more than $30 million. Regent presidents proposed tuition increase of 7 percent a year for in-state students and 4 percent a year for out-of-state students for five years.
In-state tuition would raise from $7,978 to $10,457 by the end of the five years. Out-of-state tuition will raise from $22,144 to $25,905.
The board will propose an official tuition proposal during its October meeting and will vote on the proposal in December.
The request will be discussed at the board’s meeting Monday at 10 a.m. in their office in Urbandale, Iowa.
