Sun Seeker bringing psychedelic rock to M-Shop
September 29, 2017
For Sun Seeker, oddity is part of their DNA. Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the psychedelic-rockers have been spreading their unique sound since 2013. Alex Benick, the lead singer/guitarist of the group, combined his talents with friends Asher Horton and Ben Parks, who play bass guitar and drums respectively. They later recruited seasoned keyboardist Rodrigo Avendano, who was the missing link, making the group the four-piece outfit it is today.
The groups first extended play, the emotional and cosmic infused Biddeford, released earlier this year, and the albums supporting tour has led them to the Maintenance Shop here in Ames. The songs on the record peek into multiple vibes of melancholy and nostalgia, which details a time for primary songsmith Alex Benick life that only he could explain best.
“Biddeford is a small city in southern Maine,” Benick said. “A lot of the songs on the EP I wrote after high school while I worked on a farm in a town next to Biddeford. It is a place I would often go to by myself, and being as alone in Maine as I was, it was the coolest place I could go to. So, the album boiled down to a representation of that time.”
The songs on the album are complex and intricate lyrically, but are grounded in tried and true chord progressions save for modern twists of psychedelia.
“All of the songs were written around the same time, with the exception of the featured track ‘Won’t Keep Me Up at Night,’ but they aren’t all based around the title track,” Benick explained. “What I write doesn’t always circulate around my life situation, it is fun for me to write from the perspective of others, and I like my words to remain very interpretational.”
Come see Sun Seeker at the Maintenance Shop Saturday night, at 8:00pm, and glimpse into a man’s time spent alone traveling back and forth from Biddeford.
