Iowa State defeats Northern Iowa 42-24

Iowa State defeated Northern Iowa Saturday night by a final score of 42-24.
The Panthers struck first. On UNI’s first possession, quarterback Eli Dunne went 4-for-4 for 66 yards and a touchdown.
After Iowa State pinned UNI inside the 10-yard line with a punt, linebacker Willie Harvey intercepted a third down pass and returned it to the end zone for an Iowa State touchdown, tying the score at seven points apiece.
Near the end of the first quarter, Iowa State picked off Northern Iowa’s Eli Dunne again, and Kamari Cotton-Moya returned it for another pick-six. Garrett Owens’ extra point gave the Cyclones a 14-7 lead.
Northern Iowa answered back with a 43-yard field goal with 5:31 remaining in the second quarter.
Iowa State responded with an 8-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in an 8-yard David Montgomery touchdown run.
On the first drive of the second half, Montgomery ran it in from three yards out to give Iowa State a 28-10 lead. Montgomery’s score capped off a nine-play, 65-yard drive.
Iowa State extended its lead with a 9-yard pass from Jacob Park to Marchie Murdock on its next possession.
Northern Iowa ended its cold streak with an 18-yard touchdown catch by Jaylin James near the end of the third quarter to bring the score to 35-17.
Hakeem Butler capped off an 18-play drive with a 9-yard touchdown reception to extend the lead to 42-17.
UNI tacked on one final touchdown in the waning moments with an Eli Dunne 16-yard pass to Aaron Graham.
Iowa State is back in action next Saturday home against Iowa at 11 a.m. at Jack Trice Stadium.
