Tennis advanced two doubles pairs to championship round of Gopher Invitational

The Iowa State tennis team finished the third day of the Gopher Invitational with a 3-3 record during doubles and a 2-4 singles record.

Maty Cancini will be playing for fifth place in her respective No. 1 bracket after defeating Jana Lazerovic from from South Dakota 6-2, 7-5, 10-4 in her only match of the day.  

Regina Espindola will play in the consolation finals of the No. 2 singles bracket after winning her match against Hayley Haakenstad from Nebraska 6-4, 6-3. Annabella Bonadonna lost 6-2, 6-1 to Camilla Vargas-Gomez from Minnesota.

Margarita Timakova will play for third place in the No. 3 singles bracket after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Barbara Mancera from Minnesota. In the same bracket, Erin Freeman lost her first set 5-0 before being retired in the second set. Isa Sullivan from North Dakota was awarded the win versus Freeman.

In the No. 4 singles bracket, Karen Alvarez lost her only match 3-6, 6-3, 10-3.

In doubles, Cancini paired with Espindola, overwhelmingly winning their first match 6-0. The pair then narrowly lost in the championship round 7-6. Cancini paired with Ekaterina Repina, who didn’t play today, yesterday.

Timakova/Bonadonna lost 6-0 before winning 6-0 in the consolation. 

Alvarez/Freeman won 6-3 then lost 7-5 in the championship round. 

The Cyclones’ current records during the Invitational are 13-7 for doubles and 8-11 for singles.
