Following the conclusion of the Oklahoma State and South Dakota game, rain began to pour down on the field with the Cowboys walking off the field as winners.

As the Cyclones took the field for their second game of the day the grass was still wet, and the dirt wasn’t yet dry.

Iowa State’s club baseball team played the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Both teams were coming off wins, going into the final game of the day. The Big 12 schools looked prime for a great afternoon game with the storm clouds still looming over the field.

Iowa State’s pitcher, Alan Davis, started off strong in a three up, three down to start the game against the Cowboys. In the bottom of the first, the Cyclones got two on with a walk, and James Van Berkum getting hit by a pitch.

The Cyclones failed to capitalize though. Jake Ward, the Cowboys starting pitcher, struck out the next two batters, leaving two runners stranded.

Halfway through the third inning, the weather became a factor once again as the Cowboys were able to get the bats moving during the rain, scoring off of a Garret Stalk double, taking the lead 1-0.

Davis was able to corral the Cowboys holding them to just one run in the third. And with lightning dancing beyond the outfield’s walls, the umpires called a 25-minute lightning delay.

The lightning delay was a crucial turning point in the game. Bobby Thompson, the club president, talked about the unexpected difficulties that a mid-game delay gives the team.

“The toughest part to figure out is if your pitcher keeps going,” Thompson said, “Your pitcher’s arm can get pretty cold,”

Thompson decided to stick with Davis, a decision that would lead to the Cyclones win. Thompson talked about how important it is to stay in the game physically during the break, but also mentally.

The Cyclones came storming back in the fourth after another dominant inning by Alan Davis. The Cyclones hit three doubles in the inning scoring three runs, prompting a pitching change.

Drew Butterbaugh stepped in for Jake Ward with two outs. Butterbaugh failed to get out of the inning clean, giving up two runs of his own before ending the inning.

Davis came into the sixth inning only giving up one hit all day. The sixth inning was Davis’ fourth inning where not a single Cowboy got on base. He started the game strong, and kept that intensity throughout the game.

“I was hitting my spots, getting them to pop up pitches, seemed to work out pretty well for us,”

The Cyclones would gain an insurance run off of an RBI from Alex Hinke. Nick Barclay scored off a wild pitch intended for first base.

Davis walked out to the mound, looking to finish his one-hitter complete game with an exclamation mark. The Cowboys had something else in mind. Jake Ward homered over the left field wall.

Davis would give up another hit, and an error put another on. With Jordan Forister for the Cowboys being able to pull the game to within one, Davis threw his last pitch. Forister flew out harmlessly into shallow right field ending in an Iowa State victory.
