Iowa football defeats Iowa State 44-41 in overtime

Iowa defeated Iowa State Saturday afternoon by a final score of 44-41 in overtime.

Iowa State struck first after Jacob Park found Allen Lazard in the corner of the end zone for a five-yard reception. The drive took four plays and went 60 yards.

The Hawkeyes responded quickly and tied the game at seven. The touchdown capped off a 76-yard drive in which Nate Stanley found Nick Easley out wide for a 10-yard reception.

Garret Owens finished an 80-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal to give the Cyclones a 10-7 lead. The Cyclones chewed off nearly five minutes of time with 14 plays.

Colin Downing pinned the Hawkeyes at their nine-yard line, but Nate Stanley took them 91 yards for a touchdown. Stanley gave Iowa a 14-10 lead after he and Matt Vandeberg connected for a 19-yard reception with 52 seconds left in the first half.

Iowa added to its lead in the third quarter after Akrum Wadley scampered into the end zone, ending a 94-yard drive that gave the Hawkeyes a 21-10 lead.

With the aid of a few Iowa penalties, the Cyclones took the ball 75 yards for a touchdown. Park dumped a short pass to Lazard for a five-yard pass, making the score 21-17 late in the third quarter.

The Cyclones took the lead four minutes later after Park found Hakeem Butler wide open for a 30-yard reception. Park went 3-for-4 for 45 yards.

David Montgomery plowed his way into the end zone to start the fourth quarter, adding to Iowa State’s lead. The seven-yard run put the Cyclones up 31-21.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette ended the Hawkeyes scoring drought when he caught a Nate Stanley pass to bring them within three. The drive went 92 yards.

Iowa capitalized on an interception thrown by Park and tied the game 23-yard field goal by Miguel Recinos to tie the game at 31.

The Cyclones struck right back on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Park to Butler. The pass put Park at 337 passing yards with 4:36 still left to play.

With only a minute left on the clock, Iowa went 89 yards to tie the game at 38. Wadley caught Stanley’s 46-yard pass en route to the end zone.

Garret Owens put the Cyclones ahead in overtime after he kicked a 30-yard field goal on their first possession.

Iowa ended the game in overtime after Nate Stanley found Smith-Marsette for a five-yard touchdown.

Iowa State is back in action next Saturday at Akron, Ohio. The game is slated for 11 a.m.
