Ames Main Street Cultural District named one of Iowa’s Great Places
July 26, 2017
The Ames Main Street Cultural District (MSCD) has been named one of Iowa’s newest Great Places by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
The Council Bluffs’ Haymarket Area and Burlington’s downtown riverfront were also recognized with this designation, along with Appanoose County and the Turkey River Recreational Corridor being re-designated.
The Ames Main Street Cultural District, also known as the historic downtown district of Ames, is having a transformative impact on the community by creating a welcoming space for people to live, work and play.
“While we have a really vibrant and lively downtown, no place stays special by accident,” said Cindy Hicks, MSCD Executive Director. “It takes hard work, vision, and resources. It’s a job that is never done. We hope this designation is a catalyst for some big improvements to our historic downtown.”
All of Iowa’s Great Places will receive access to professional development training, technical assistance opportunities, a network of strong communities and leaders, etc.
“The Iowa Great Places program continues to support Iowans as they build and strengthen cultural vitality in their communities,” Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director Mary Cownie said. “Their efforts enhance quality of life and generate economic growth for Iowans, and we’re proud to join them as partners through this program. I encourage Iowans to join me in congratulating them for this well-deserved recognition.”
The places can also apply for funding for projects tied to their Vision Plan.
The MSCD was established in 2004 with a mission to advance and promote downtown as the destination district in the heart of the Ames community.
