Here are the top 5 stories from the past week:
1. City council considers more student housing– Both student housing and human trafficking were the talk of Monday’s city council meeting. The proposal of more student housing was denied with a 3-3 vote. Human trafficking was also brought up after a community member brought up the concern of it happening in massage parlors in Ames.
2. Sexual assault reported on campus– According to a university-wide email sent out on Wednesday, an individual reported being sexual assaulted on June 21 near Lake Laverne. ISU Police are asking anyone who may have been around the lake at that team to contact their non-emergency number.
3. Bachelors in nursing approved– The Bachelor of Science in Nursing was approved by the Board of Regents. The program does still need approval from the Board of Nursing which will most likely happen in July. The program hopes to accommodate 50 students in the fall of 2018.
4. Smokin’ Oak offers free pizza at grand opening– Smokin’ Oak, the newest pizza joint along Lincoln Way, had its grand opening on Thursday. The restaurant offered free pizza to customers. Smokin’ Oak is the third pizza shop to make its debut just on Lincoln way alone.
5. Cap City league play continues– The Cap City League continued in Des Moines this week. The league went on as planned until the fourth game on Sunday evening. All four ISU players were absent, but Jared Stansbury, staff writer for CycloneFanatic.com made his debut in Sunday’s final game. Stansbury had the opportunity to throw on Solomon Young’s jersey and ultimately held his ground against the athletes.
