Local folk artists spent Sunday in Roosevelt Park
July 31, 2017
Every Sunday is a concert in Roosevelt Park. Rockets of Desire and The Cautionaries showed up last Sunday night to play folk rock music for attendees.
The Cautionaries is made of three talented musicians, Ben Schrag (guitar), Cal Rebhuhn (cajon), and Jim McNaMara (upright bass).
“We don’t rehearse that much, as Cal and Jim are exceptional talented musicians, so we don’t need to spend much time on everything, they will always understand what they need to do,” Schrag said.
Schrag often writes beautiful melodies and basic chords for this band.
“Songs say something better on their own than I can fully explain in prose. For example, “Break Me in” was written right after I moved to Ames, and to me, seems to express a desire to embrace the future,” Schrag said. “Another song, “To The Waves,” talks about the challenge of making good art. The line in it “A ship is for the ocean, so we take her to the waves,” is not only a song about sailors and the ocean, but also describes the way I think about new songs and art in general.”
The Rockets of Desire band started to play music in Ames about six years ago. Bryon Dudley and Rachel Dudley first started this band. Tom Russell joined the band a little later after playing solo first.
“We used to play rock music, but now we change to folk music,” Dudley said. “Tom and Bryon mainly focus on writing original music. Our songs can be described as a mix of country, blues, folk and alternative music.”
Three audience members named Sally, Jelly and Greg go to the Summer Sundays Concert Series every weekend.
“I like the music here,” Sally said. “Sometimes it’s rock music and sometimes it’s country music. I like all types of music, especially folk and rock.”
Roosevelt Summer Sundays Concert Series has been going on for fifteen years at Roosevelt park. The event was first started as part of the Ames community school program, organizers said. Every summer, they will organize 10-12 concerts completely free. August 27th, they will have a big potluck event.
